The Quality of Life of People with Bipolar Disorders and Their Caregivers

OBJECTIVE: This study was descriptively conducted in order to determine the quality of life of patients with Bipolar Disorder and their caregivers.
METHODS: The research was conducted with a total of 53 patients with bipolar disorder and their 53 caregivers in the psychiatry policlinic. The data were collected using Personal Information Form and World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument–Turkish version. Also, laboratory results of blood-lithium, valproate and charbamazepine levels were evaluated.
RESULTS: Among the patients that participated to the study, the average score of the quality of life of the patients was found to be 74.2±11.0 while the average score of quality of life of their caregivers’ was 79.8±10.8. A positive correlation exists between the quality of life of the patients and their caregivers (p=0.043, r= 0.279). However, there was no significant positive correlation between the condition of patients’ with normal levels of medicine in the blood as well as the regular tracking of the medicine levels of the patient and the quality of life of the patients and their caregivers(p>0.05).
CONCLUSION: The study presents that the quality of life of the patients with bipolar disorder and their caregivers are affected by one another while the regular drug use and the condition of the level of the medicine in the blood is to be normal does not affect the quality of life of the patients and their caregivers. Therefore, use of drugs alone is ineffective in improving the quality of life of patients with bipolar disorder. Thus, it is recommended that psychosocial interventions are also implemented alongside drug treatment.

Bipolar Bozukluğu Olan Bireyler ve Bakımverenlerinin Yaşam Kalitesi

AMAÇ: Bu çalışma, Bipolar Bozukluğu olan bireyler ve bakım verenlerinin yaşam kalitesini belirlemek amacıyla tanımlayıcı olarak yapılmıştır.
YÖNTEMLER: Çalışma bir psikiyatri polikliniğinde bipolar bozukluk tanısı ile izlenen 53 hasta ve aynı hastalara bakım veren 53 birey ile yapılmıştır. Araştırmada veriler; Kişisel Bilgi Formu ve Dünya Sağlık Örgütü Yaşam Kalitesi Ölçeği Kısa Formu Türkçe Versiyonu ile toplanmıştır. Ayrıca hastaların kan lityum, valproik asit ve karbamazepin düzeyleri ile ilgili laboratuar sonuçları değerlendirmeye alınmıştır.
BULGULAR: Çalışmaya katılan hastaların yaşam kalitesi puan ortalaması 74.2±11.0, bakım verenlerin yaşam kalitesi puan ortalaması 79.8 ±10.8 bulunmuştur. Hastaların yaşam kalitesi ve bakım veren bireylerin yaşam kalitesi arasında pozitif ilişki bulunmuştur (r= 0.279, p=0.043). Ayrıca çalışmada hastaların kandaki ilaç düzeylerinin normal değerlerde olma durumu ve hastanın ilaç düzeylerinin düzenli takip edilmesi ile hasta ve bakım veren bireylerin yaşam kalitesi arasındaki ilişkinin anlamlı olmadığı bulunmuştur (p>0.05).
SONUÇ: Bu çalışmada, bipolar bozukluğu olan hasta ve bakım veren bireylerin yaşam kalitelerinin birbirinden etkilendiği, hastaların düzenli ilaç kullanımı ve kandaki ilaç düzeylerinin normal değerlerde olmasının hasta ve bakım veren bireylerin yaşam kalitesini etkilemediği bulunmuştur. Bu nedenle ilaç kullanımının yaşam kalitesi üzerinde tek başına olumlu bir etki oluşturmadığı, ilaç tedavileriyle birlikte psikososyal müdahalelerinde birlikte yürütülmesi önerilmektedir.
